functionally ODEX/400 consists of two parts: - The Communications Module (X.25, ISDN, TCP/IP) (SUBDRV01)
- The User Interface to the monitor (ODEX400)
Information is passed between the user interface and the communications module by the AS400’s own Intrasystem Communications Function (ICF). Communications Module The communications module handles the connection with either the X.25, ISDN or TCP/IP network and is able to support up to 20 simultaneous communications sessions at any one time. The responsibility of this module is to listen for incoming calls and to look for files that have been scheduled for sending and require transmission. When a call is in progress, this module drives the network line and implements the Odette File Transfer Protocol (OFTP). The communications monitor is designed to run 24 hours a day. This enables the monitor to make calls or send files at pre-set times, even though the system is unattended and all users are logged off. The activity of this module can be viewed by any user through the User Interface. This will present a screen showing each session, its current status, and, if it is not idle, the trading partner that is be ODEX/400 User Interface. Two sets of User Interface programs are provided with the system, allowing both full screen and batch interaction with the communications monitor. When a file has been scheduled to be sent, either interactively or in batch, the communications monitor will choose the file and call the destination as defined in the user directory. The User Interface also handles the maintenance of all the files needed by ODEX/400 in its day-to-day operations, such as the log file, the control file and the user directory. The batch interface allows the user complete control over the system, so that a file can be automatically received. Most commands to drive the user interface are in an AS400 type format, for example to browse the ODEX log file, the command is DSPODXLOG. All commonly used commands such as file schedule, directory update, etc, can also be accessed by an easy-to-use menu system.
