Communications Support Program

The XSP is the component responsible for the actual transmission and reception of X.25 packets.
It provides a high level API to the X.25 facility.

The XSP program runs under MVS and is the interface between NPSI and the FTM (File Transfer Monitor). XSP is also an interface between TCP/IP for MVS and the FTM, supporting communications across IP networks. The NCP (Network Control Program) Packet Switching Interface performs routing and session management tasks. It runs in the communications controller and is an IBM SNA networking term. SNA (System Network Architecture) by IBM is a suite of protocols mainly used with IBM mainframe and AS/400 computers. The XSP component:

  • Manages data communication on one or more X.25 links and handles all NPSI/GATE data transfer
  • Manages data communications on one or more paths into TCP/IP for MVS
  • Manages all operator commands, both to the ODEX OFTP systems and the XSP component itself
  • Supports multiple ODEX systems

XSP supports multiple X.25 links which may be attached either to one or to a number of different 37x5 FEPs. This capability is of use in large corporate SNA networks that have international coverage and who wish to centralise either their CPU capabilities or EDI facility. Running a single ODEX/MVS, outgoing X.25 calls can be made in the country of the destination trading partner, so reducing the costs of international X.25 and capitalising upon the corporate SNA network. XSP connects to X.25 lines defined within the 37x5 FEP and uses the GATE (LLC4) support within NPSI to monitor and control the X.25 dataline. The X.25 dataline may be used simultaneously with other LLCs such as 3270.

Customisation

ODEX/MVS provides the user with a number of user exits which are written in IBM Assembler and invoked at key decision points within the EDI process. The exits allow the user a great deal of control and access to information that may be used for polling and accounting purposes.
The user exits, if authorised, may be used to generate SMF records that may be used for internal corporate accounting and billing.
