UIF User Interface

The UIF (User Interface) is a collection of programs and sub-routines that allow users to interact with the FTM via IBM’s strategic APPC LU6.2 program-to-program communications facility. UIF’s are typically active only for a few moments; multiple UIF’s may be active at any one time.

There are three ways in which the user may schedule/retrieve data into and out of the FTM via the UIF:-

  • TSO
  • Batch
  • Sub-routines linked into user’s own applications

The TSO interface runs as a full-screen 3270 menu system. Typically, the TSO interface would be used by the EDI administrator to define new users and review communications status.

The Batch Interface is the most common way to integrate EDI into production systems. Typically the user would add an ODEX job step to production JCL to retrieve or schedule EDI data, then check return codes which indicate the status of the action performed.

The sub-routine method is for users who wish to have a much higher degree of control as to which type of EDI data they wish to process or who wish to integrate EDI into their systems in a real time manner.
